You may (or may not) have head of Slack. It's an online tool that millions of people around the world use for communicating, working and discussing. It's like a combination of Facebook, Whatsapp, Dropbox, SMS and email.
We now have an iCycle Slack - space which allows us all to keep in touch, on or off the bike: https://icyclecc.slack.com
We are currently using a whole mschmash of media: email, forums, facebook, whatsapp, texts to keep people in touch. Whatsapp is convenient - but every group is a private island - and none of them really provide us with the ability to easily update riders if Rides change at short notices, or enable us to get hold of each other while out unless we have each others mobile numbers.
Slack allows us to provide notifications from the website as well as making it easier to reach everyone in the club. It's like an open collection of WhatsApp Groups accessible to all members - who can dip in and out as they wish.
Slack's tagline says it best:
Slack is a platform for team communication: everything in one place, instantly searchable, available wherever you go.
It runs on all desktops and browsers, mobiles (Android and iOS) and costs us nothing.
Communication within Slack is organized into the main categories:
- Direct messages
Channels: Keep the channels nice and simple. These fulfill the role that the scattered WhatsApp groups do at the moment - only everyone can see them and join in. Anyone can create a new Channel for ongoing information or notifications. We'll be using the channels for notifications of calendar changes so you'll get immediate notification of changes.
Direct messages. This is self-explanatory. Communication between two team members that only they can see. You can get hold of others if you get dropped -- even give them a call via Slack!!
Or you can @mention someone in a post in a Channel too - and they'll get notified and (hopefully) join in the conversation!
